Hit Them Where It Hurts (Empathy)
Description: Your character’s skill at reading people makes her adept at getting people angry, depressed, or similarly upset. Normally, you’d use Provoke for this; with this stunt, if you’ve succeeded at an Empathy roll against the target previously, you can use Empathy instead. This is especially lethal when combined with a successful read on someone that reveals an aspect.
Cold Read (Empathy)
Description: Normally, using Empathy to get a read on someone requires at least a few minutes of conversation. Characters with this stunt do so two steps faster on the Time Increments Table.
A Peek Inside (Empathy) Requires two other Empathy stunts
Description: The character understands others so deeply he can make fairly accurate guesses about their behavior. Normally, trying to learn something specific about another person is very imprecise – you learned something, but is it what you were looking for? At best you reveal an aspect.
However, with this stunt, after a successful read, you may immediately ask the Story Teller a hypothetical question about the target’s motives, which the Story Teller must be able to answer with yes, no, or maybe. The question must relate to the kind of person the target is, not things they’ve done, though it may ask if they’re capable of doing certain things. If the Story Teller answers maybe, you can ask a second question for clarification; this second question may seek details, rather than another one-word answer.
: +2 to Creating an Advantage when manipulating people.
Description: The character may magically alter another person’s emotions. He may, for instance, dampen a person’s anxiety in a fight to make them more willing to fight on. He may allay fears, inspire greatness, and even sooth away pain and wounds (stress). Generally, he may not cause someone to go against their moral compass, but using rapport or provoke, he may convince the person that an enemy is so heinous that extreme measures must be taken. He can also calm agitated or excited targets, which allows them active resistance. Otherwise
This character can’t read the person’s mind. It takes an Empathy Skill roll to identify the person’s current emotions, else the alteration might be spotted (for failure and success with cost results). A soother can make the person feel exactly as they wish. Additionally, they may also affect the emotions of small groups, or even larger crowds given adequate time reading the crowd and Creating Advantages before trying to alter their emotions. He can only sooth those who are present, such as in a courtyard or palace ballroom. The soother can affect one or more zones, but he must generally be able to see or detect those present. The larger the crowd, the harder it is to manipulate their emotions. This is why many soothers spend extra time working on such crowds, gently drawing them all into his web. Note: This is a mental power, and the soother does not need to speak or otherwise make his presence known, as long as he can see the majority of the people he is trying to soothe.
