The Wizard's Oath

The following is the oath that all Tower and Peregrine Wizards swear after they’ve passed their Apprenticeship Gauntlet in order to be presented with their Wizard’s Sigil.

“I, (name), hereby swear my everlasting loyalty to the Order of the Tower and its members.”

“I will not deprive nor attempt to deprive any member of the Order of his magical power. I will not slay nor attempt to slay any individual member of the Order, except in justly executed and formally declared Wizard’s War. I hereby understand that Wizard’s War is an open conflict between two wizards who may slay each other without breaking this oath, and that should I be slain in a Wizard’s War, no retribution shall fall on he who slays me. I also understand that during periods of mundane war or conflict against powerful enemies, I shall follow the Articles of War as drafted and approved by my liege’s superiors and ratified by the Grand Master’s Council. No other wizard of the Order, nor any mundane person shall be accountable for my death if it occurs during sanctioned war, and likewise no retribution shall fall on he who slays me.”

“I will abide by the decisions made by fair vote at the Grand Master’s Council. I will have one vote to submit to the Council, and I will use my vote prudently. I will respect as equal the votes of all others at the Council.”

“I will not endanger the Order through my actions. Nor will I interfere with the affairs of mundanes and thereby bring ruin upon my fellow wizards. I will serve my liege to the best of my abilities, as long as my actions do not violate this oath. If my liege presents me with an order which will violate my oath, I am obligated to report this breach to my superiors within the order. I will provide substantial evidence to back up my accusation.”

“I will not deal with otherworldly creatures, lest I imperil my soul and the souls of my fellow wizards as well. I will not molest the faeries, lest their vengeance catch my fellow wizards also. Although I am not required to participate in religious activities, I will respect the Pantheon and its servants, but am in no way obliged to take orders from any save my liege or my direct superiors within the Order. I will not provoke or interfere with the affairs of the Church of the Pantheon or its members, lest I bring ruin upon my fellow wizards.
“I will not use magic to scry upon members of the Order of the Tower, nor shall I use it to peer into their affairs, not even if ordered by my liege, unless permitted under the Articles of War.”

“I will train apprentices who will swear to this Code, and should any of them turn against the Order and my fellow wizards, I shall be the first to strike them down and bring them to justice. No apprentice of mine shall be called Wizard until he first swears to uphold this Code.”

“I concede to any Grand Master, the right to take my apprentice if he should find my apprentice valuable to him in his studies.”

“I shall further the knowledge of the Order and share with its members all that I find in my search for wisdom and power.”

“I shall work diligently with my liege, to protect his house and hearth as if it were my own, to protect his kin and those under his protection as if my own kin. My liege’s enemies are my enemies, except where this conflict would break my oath to the Order.”

“I request that, should I break this oath, I be cast out of the Order. If I am cast out, I ask my fellow wizards to find me and slay me that my life may not continue in degradation and infamy.”

“The enemies of the Order are my enemies. The friends of the Order are my friends. The allies of the Order are my allies. Let us work as one and grow hale and strong.”

“This oath I hereby swear on (astrological date). Woe to they who try to tempt me to break this oath, and woe to me if I succumb to the temptation.”
